The "IF" Contingency

 By Rev. James A. Lewis, Ohio

The definition of the word if is described as, “A possibility, condition, or stipulation”.  Have you ever considered Our Home built in 1996, set upon 5 acres of landall the “ifs” in the Bible?  Online, it states that there are 1,282 ifs recorded in the King James Bible.

So therefore, we can conclude that Gods Word gives us many possibilities, conditions, and stipulations, which guarantees or promises (something) in an agreement likened to a contract between two parties, which can, and will occur, if we first meet the conditions of the agreement.

The American Heritage College Dictionary describes the word “Contingent” as an event or condition likely to occur, dependent upon conditions.  That means there are 1,282 conditions likely to occur, contingent upon conditions that must be first met by you and me.

John 8:31

  If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed

In 1996, Jody and I went to the Bank to see if we could obtain a loan to build our home.  And the Bank drew up a contract, which stated that they would provide us with the money that was needed to build our home, if we promised to repay them back in a certain amount of time, along with a certain amount of interest.  By signing this contract up front, we came together in agreement contingent upon certain conditions, and the monies were provided to build our home.

The word "if" is such a powerful word used by God, declaring the promises of God to His people, backed up with the power, the authority, and the ability to do what His Word says it will do, if we in turn will do something on our part.

Therefore, in many ways, Gods Word is the legal, binding, contract that He has offered to us, filled with an abundance of blessings, contingent upon certain conditions that we must first come into agreement with, in order for those blessings to occur.

You see, in order for this binding and legal contract to come into effect we must first do our part, and that is exactly what His Word tells us to do.  He then, will do His part, which is what He has promised us in His Word.

Numbers 23:19 Revised Standard.  God is not a man, that he should lie or a son of man, that he should repent.  Has he said, and will he not do it?  Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?  Let me give you just a couple of examples;

2 Chronicles 7:14 says, "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."

So in some ways God is giving us an ultimatum saying that if we, Gods people, those who are called by His name, would humble ourselves, pray, and seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways, then God will hear from heaven, and will forgive our sins, and will heal our lands.

So humbling ourselves, praying, seeking Gods face, and turning away from our wicked ways, are the conditions, or the stipulations that we must do in order to receive the blessings from God, which are the forgiveness of our sins, and the healing of our lands.

If we choose not to follow those conditions, then the second part of the contract, those things that God desires to do for us, will not be granted.  The contract will be null and void. I believe we need to follow what God has outlined for us to do in His word that we might begin to see a mighty move of God across our lands today.

John 15:7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

There again God is saying if (denotes action on our part) we would abide, (live, dwell, and remain) in Him, and if Gods words live, dwell, and remain in us, then whatever things we ask of Him, it shall be granted to us.

God is laying out before us in the beginning of this sentence, the possibility, the conditions, and the stipulations that we must meet in order for God to fulfill the latter part of His agreement. See how many "ifs" you can find in the Bible, and then begin to notice just what those possibilities, conditions, and stipulations are God is talking about in His Word.

As you come into agreement with those conditions, just wait and see what the Lord will do for you!
